☆ Snowflake obsidian is a type of obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass, characterized by distinctive white or grayish, radially-clustered patterns of crystals called spherulites. These spherulites are composed of needle-like crystals of cristobalite, a type of quartz, that form within the otherwise dark, glassy matrix of the obsidian. 

☆ Snowflake obsidian forms when small amounts of water or steam become trapped in the cooling lava. These gases freeze into small crystal clusters that expand and contract within the cooling lava, causing fractures and creating the "snowflake" patterns.
